How Long Does It Take to Get Approved for a Gaming License

April 4, 2019

So, you are interested in adding video gaming terminals (VGTs) to your establishment! The first thing every establishment owner should be aware of is that adding video gaming is not always an easy process and should be considered a serious undertaking.

Arguably the biggest hurdle to adding gaming to any establishment is obtaining your video gaming license from the Illinois Gaming Board (IGB). There is a lengthy application to be filled out and you should go over each section carefully in order to avoid any mistakes.

You can check out the online application here on the Illinois Gaming Board’s website.

One of the biggest questions we receive when it comes to the license application is how long does it take to get approved for an IGB gaming license? The answer is an unsatisfying: it depends. We know that is not what you want to hear, but in some cases establishments can be licensed in about a month and in other cases in can take much, much longer.

So how can you improve your odds at a shorter turn-around time for your license approval? We have a few tips that could make a major difference.

Make Sure Your Application is AccurateNew call-to-action

As previously stated, the IGB application is lengthy and can seem overwhelming to some establishment owners. But it is very important to take your time on your application and go over each section carefully in order to avoid any possible mistakes. Both major and minor mistakes on the application can cause serious delays in the licensing process.

Depending on how straight forward or complex your application is, the IGB may take extra time on your application to go through your background check as thoroughly as possible.  For example, if you have several owners or an otherwise complicated ownership structure, it tends to delay the process.  Every individual owner of 5% or more must be fingerprinted, which can also take time.  Another very important tip is to fully disclose everything that is asked for on the application – including all relevant criminal history information.  Do not omit any pertinent information because the IGB will eventually uncover it and your failure to disclose can not only cause delay, but might result in a denial of your application.

Make certain you fully disclose all ownership and be upfront about everything that could cause possible flags in your background check.

Be Patient

We know this can be hard advice to hear when you are eagerly waiting to add video gaming to your establishment, but you must be patient. The IGB only meets once per month (and sometimes skips a month due to scheduling conflicts).  The IGB can only license or deny pending applications for video gaming licenses at these monthly meetings. Thankfully, the IGB updates its website after every monthly meeting with a list of newly licensed locations. You can check out the full lists of pending applications, denied applications, and licensed locations on the IGB website.  You may also find answers to some of your application-related questions by reviewing the IGB’s list of frequently asked questions.
